Im trying to narrow down my options. I’ll just be using it for Windows Office(for regular school work), random Internet usage, and Netflix/Amazon. Ive been looking at the Surface 3. Reviews are really good, price seems just fine. Though a good case and keyboard is another $100. I don’t like that it doesn’t have a HDMI port. With that in mind I’m looking solely at tablets and small computers/notebooks.

Just get the Surface

I’d get either a Surface or a basic laptop. What do you need HDMI for?

I had one of these as my work computer, a Dell Latitude E6430, it seemed indestructible, I beat the absolute shit out of it. Dropped it multiple times from 5 feet onto concrete and stood up 2.5 years of oil field dust coating everything. This is really my only experience with a personal Windows computer as I’ve always used macs at home, since I can remember.

It depends on how you plan on using it. If you primarily use it like a tablet, the surface might be a good choice but if you use it a like a desktop, the screen is on the small side. It is also difficult to use on your lap because all the weight is behind the screen. Personally i would recommend something like the dell xps-13 or something from the lenovo yoga lineup. Both are still pretty compact and I personally like having a larger screen and something I can type on the couch or in bed with. For office, if your school doesn’t give you the software for free, Microsoft has a pretty good deal on 365 for students, $80 for 4 years. Either way, make sure whatever you get has an SSD!

So I can play it off a larger screen.

Asus make pretty great laptops. Just avoid Lenovo like the plague, which is a shame to say.

I never do real typing on anything but a flat hard surface, so the size isn’t a problem. And my biggest thing is to have a smaller computer.

Lenovo is probably out of my price range anyway.

As cheap as you can find a Wondows machine.
Seriously. There's a negligible difference between the $200 and $4-600 computers. Buy cheap, back up often, and get the lifetime Office product key.

“If it’s made of shiny plastic, just say no” this is my general laptop buying advice.

I like the surface, but they seem expensive for what you get. Depends on your price range, really... Also, don’t forget black friday isn’t that far off if you’re not in a hurry.

I’ve just bought a Dell refurbished Venue Pro 11 with the faster of the 2 Core M’s, 128gb ssd and 4gb ram (they did 8gb as well), lovely 1080p screen, hdmi out, surprisingly good speakers, sd slot etc, great little tablet, was £310 (UK Ebay) with a 1 year Dell collect and return warranty. I also got a brand new keyboard for it (which has a battery in it, about 15 hours web browsing!). It’s great, made up with it. The trouble with Surface 3 is the Atom cpu and the issues that come with it, like the slow eMMC storage, no hdmi etc and it’s expensive for what it is.
I’d recommend having a look on Ebay for one of these, we have a Surface Pro 4 i7 as well and I prefer this (am using it now) for general sofa web browsing etc.

Sounds like the surface might be a good fit then. As for the hdmi issue, i have something like this that I carry around to connect to external screens/projectors. https://www.amazon.com/VicTsing-Displ…

Will look into that. I got the feeling that the Surface is expensive for what it is, and I’m not a fan of buying something for the name.

LOL I say nothing.

I have the Atom powered Dell 11" tablet I used for invoicing. I’m not sure it’s speedy enough for your needs but I’m cutting it loose pretty cheap so it might be worth a shot if interested. I used it for creating invoices for a few years, that’s it. Now I’m able to do the same and print directly via Bluetooth to my portable printer with my smartphone so I don’t need it. I will say this, I’ve always been satisfied with Dell’s hardware and support so they are definitely worth shopping against the Surface.

I bought an Asus convertible and it soured me on the brand...every brand has issues here and there, but that thing had quite a bit of complaints when I was Googling my issues.

Interesting. I’ve never had an issue with an Asus product. With laptops, though, it’s kind of a crap shoot.

My Asus Nexus tablet was nice, but the Windows machine..not so much. Probably more indicative of the model than the brand. I always heard Lenovo stuff was pretty stout. Usually though it is a crap shoot with Windows machines on the cheap.

I have an IdeaPad and it’s not great, and a lot of them are getting less than stellar reviews. But as you said, normally it’s more about the model and less about the brand.

Maybe Lenovo is still thriving on the old IBM reputation but going on the cheap. Hope that’s not going to happen with Motorola as I like them quite a bit.

Yeah, I had a first-gen G and it was amazing. Google did really well with them, and I’m in the same boat as you hoping they keep quality up.

Was going to get ahold of you once I made this post. The charging port on that computer has basically stopped working. Haven’t been able to turn it on for a few days.

Bullocks. I fixed it a couple years ago...shoot me an email sometime when you have a chance, if you want to play some shipping tag, I can fix it again.
